The Department of English of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) together with the  English Language Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) in Indonesia capacitated 60 high school teachers stationed in the hinterland barangays with new skills and pedagogies in teaching English as a tool for communication and advancing cultures in 21st-century learning.

Through a community service program called “Communicate in English with Us,” teachers learned how to use information and communications technology (ICT) in differentiated instruction and project-based learning to promote inclusive education.

Merciditha Alicando, chair of the English department at MSU-IIT, said the participants learned how to use QR codes and were shown how to use ICT in the classroom. She then reminded the teachers that they should be excited about teaching their students, show them real things, and encourage them to do whatever they want in life.

Eko Purwanti, dean of UMY’s Faculty of Language and Education, said that their partnership with MSU-IIT was important because it gave teachers the tools to help their students learn more.

“Having this partnership, we can provide better opportunities for teachers to empower themselves. By empowering our students with English competencies, we believe that students can broaden their knowledge,” she said.

Participants of the program shared the challenges that they experienced in teaching. With the program, they have gained skills in preparing learning materials and learned strategies for teaching their lessons interactively.

Moreover, Mae Camañan, an English teacher from Tubaran National High School (TNHS) in Barangay Mandulog, is thankful for the program as it helped her improve her ways of teaching.

“The program really gives me a chance to improve myself in the way I teach English, especially in the form of macro skills. It really gives me a guide on how to motivate my students on handling the plan,” she said.

On the other hand, Spencer Tano of TNHS said he learned the importance of using differentiated instructions (DI) in delivering lessons based on students’ learning styles. (AAA/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)

Pwede ra nila ma monitor ang kondisyon ni baby sa akong tiyan bisan wala ang doctor kay pwede ra nila ipadala online” says Melca, an expecting mother from Barangay Taglimao, CDO. As one of the beneficiaries of RxBox in their health center, Melca shares that the presence of RxBox has helped them, especially the pregnant women and the senior citizens, save hospital fees, fare and time.

Recipient rural health units and hospitals were provided with free capability training on the handling and preventive maintenance of units. Each beneficiary healthcare facility was provided with technical assistance and a complete set of computers and routers for the integration of electronic medical records.

The usage of the units was also monitored for three months through the RxDeteC, a multi-component application software developed which consists of an android application that gathers and transmits daily usage reports and a website that stores and displays the utilization and status of the RxBox units.

The RxBox is a multi-component program that includes a biomedical device, electronic medical record systems, and training designed to provide better access to health care services. It can reduce healthcare cost by enabling health workers to diagnose, monitor, and treat patients within the rural health facility.

With the use of the six built-in medical sensors, which include the Cardiotocograph (CTG), Fetal Heart Rate Monitor, Electrocardiogram (ECG), Blood Pressure Monitor, Pulse Oxymeter, and a Temperature, the device allows the diagnosis of the health conditions of the patients in the RHUs.

This multi-component device can store data in an electronic medical record and transmit health information via the internet to a clinical specialist in the Philippine General Hospital for expert advice. It also catalyzes improvement in the local referral system by facilitating teleconsultations (audio-video conferences) within the National Telehealth Service Program.

RxBox was developed by the University of the Philippines National Telehealth Center and UP Diliman College of Engineering. The project, “Roll-out of 1000 RxBox Telehealth Devices in Selected Rural Health Centers in the Philippines” was funded by DOST Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD). (Nova Belle C. Celebrities, fashion designers, beauty queens, and Filipiniana enthusiasts gathered on January 26 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines to celebrate and to pay tribute to the country’s national symbol and identity – the Philippine Terno – through the event, TernoCon 2020.

Initiated by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), through its Cultural Exchange Department, and the homegrown clothing brand, Bench (Suyen Corporation), Ternocon aims to encourage the use of the terno as formal dress and inspire a new generation of Filipino designers to make ternos that are grounded in the history of the Philippine national dress.

This is also a platform to motivate regional designers to create works that are at par with the construction techniques of master designers.

The contestants of this year’s Ternocon are Gavin Ruffy of Las Piñas; Krizia Jimenez of Quezon City; June Samson Pugat of Batac, Ilocos Norte; Dinnes Obusan of Tinambac, Camarines Sur; Abdul Dianalan of Iligan City; Renz Reyes of Imus, Cavite; Hannah Adrias of Pasay; Windell B. Madis of Tarlac, Ilocos Norte; Jean Avellanosa-Dee of Manila; Toping Zamora of Davao; Jaggy Glarino of General Santos; and CJ Martin of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.

Below are some of Dianalan’s collection, photographed by Critic Beauty Philippines.

Capping the night was the announcement of winners: Dinnes Obusan from Camarines Sur (Bronze), Jaggy Glarino from General Santos City (Silver), and Hannah Adrias from Pasay City (Gold).

Special Award: Chief Mentor Choice

Abdul Dianalan’s creation has captured the heart of the TernoCon2020 Chief Mentor Inno Sotto. According to Marbbie Tagabucba of The Philippine Star, Sotto likens Dianalan’s collection to sci-fi heroine Barbarella’s wardrobe, but all white, varying in sheer and opaque, smooth and textured.

In a snippet of Tagabucba’s article, she quotes:

As a nod to the Muslim hijab, the looks included wide headbands and sheer bucket hats. Sotto laughs as he recalls, “I tell him, ‘Para kang Russian cosmonaut mag-isip.’”

That despite Dianalan hails from a conservative, predominantly Muslim hometown in Mindanao, yet manages to come up with something so retro-futuristic and refined, caught the attention of the Chief Mentor’s Medal signatories. It’s a perfect example of the transportive quality of fashion.

Dianalan was awarded “for his technical excellence and dedication to the entire process of Ternocon 2020 awarded to Abdul Dianalan on January 27, 2020.” (quote from the certificate signed by Sotto, Cabili, and Gonzales). They had a mini awarding among themselves backstage.

Why Huawei chose MSU-IIT?

Mr. CJ Wong of Huawei Regional Office said during a presscon that they were so impressed with the performance of MSU-IIT for consistently placing top on the Philippine Start-UP Challenge by DICT and PSIA, a Huawei-sponsored competition over the past three years.

“We came to Mindanao and signed up with MSU-IIT [which is] consistently placing top on the ICT Academy [Competition], with that Huawei ICT Academy wishes to train the future talents on ICT Competitions to create a platform to let students expose to the outside world and see how the industry works and bring out the skill sets of the students. Through this partnership, University/Academy delivers Huawei ICT technologies training, encourages students to get Huawei certification, and develops talents with practical skills for the ICT industry and the community. Huawei has developed a comprehensive range of ICT career certifications based on its industry leading technologies and global practices.

Huawei ICT Academy is highly committed and excited on the signed partnership with MSU-IIT of which recognizing local talents and ICT skills in Mindanao. The goal of this partnership is to bridge the digital divide connecting what the students learned in the classroom and what is in it in the industry. This aims to shorten the learning curve and allow the students to learn ahead from their peers, acquire advance tech-skills and explore how the competitive world works. Moreover, Huawei also guarantees that if you graduate with a Huawei certification program, they offer a priority chance to be employed in Huawei.
