Leading integrated telco network PLDT Inc (PLDT) is encouraging its customers and communities to work closely with authorities against suspicious, service-related activities in their areas.

This is in light of recent incidents in Davao del Norte, where subscribers were scammed by persons misrepresenting themselves as PLDT personnel.

“We would like to remind our subscribers to be vigilant against various scams, and to report suspicious incidents to local authorities in their area,” said Alan Abrina, Customer Service South Mindanao Area Head at PLDT, adding that PLDT is also collaborating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Davao Region and Davao City to help keep its customers safe from scammers.

PLDT also reminded subscribers that PLDT field technicians or sales personnel would not recover their modems without replacing them first.

Persons who would like to report such incidents can also do so via PLDT’s Hotline 164 – just call “164” on any landline or mobile phone, regardless of network.

When reporting incidents such as cable breakage or other incidents, customers are requested to provide the following information: a brief description of the incident, date and time of discovery, and exact location (barangay, town/city, province), and their name and contact details (mobile or landline number, email address). A landmark or photo indicating the place of incident will also be helpful. Other relevant information may be asked when necessary, in the course of the investigation.

“By working together, we can all help improve PLDT’s services as well as keep our communities safe from accidents that may be caused by low-hanging wires or open or broken manhole covers,” said Cathy Yang, FVP and Group Corporate Communications Head at PLDT.

These initiatives are part of PLDT’s continuing efforts to further enhance the quality of customer experience. PLDT operates the country’s most extensive fiber infrastructure, which spanned over 1.1 million kilometers as of end-2023. This fiber infrastructure also supports Smart’s mobile network.

ILIGAN CITY (PIA) — Iliganons planted 10,000 mangrove propagules along the banks of the Mandulog River in Barangay Santiago on April 21, as part of their efforts to safeguard the marine ecosystem.

Dubbed “Mangrove Restoration, Coastal Cleanup, and MusiKalikasan,” the initiative took place as part of the activities for the Earth Day and Civil Society Organizations Month observance this April.

It was organized by the Iligan City People’s Council (ICPC) in collaboration with the city government, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, Iligan Medical Center College (IMCC), and the Santiago Barangay Council to rehabilitate the city’s coastal waters and foster environmental awareness among Iliganons.

Students from various educational institutions, together with law enforcement and military personnel, as well as representatives from national government agencies, private organizations, and other sectors, took part in the mangrove planting.

“We mobilized more than a thousand Iliganons from various organizations, formations, schools, and socio-civic groups, among others, because we want to make a statement that in Iligan we are one in taking care of our mother earth,” said ICPC chairperson Abel Moya.

Moya also highlighted the importance of safeguarding the city by planting mangroves to mitigate the impact of disasters or calamities, particularly in light of past experiences such as Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi) in December 2011.

Ralph Mondoñedo, a student from Barangay Bunawan, an inland community within the city, demonstrated his commitment to environmental stewardship by rising early to partake in the mangrove planting effort. For him, the act of planting mangroves holds the promise of community enhancement.

Nursing students from IMCC also echoed the importance of environmental stewardship through tree-planting initiatives.

Kylene Danielle Ong underscored that it is crucial to care not only for fellow human beings but also for the environment. She stressed that the vitality of both humanity and the environment are intricately intertwined, highlighting that a flourishing environment is essential for sustaining human life.

Kate Dianne Tingcang emphasized the pressing need to combat rising temperatures. She underscored the significance of tree planting as a practical step towards enhancing air quality and mitigating carbon emissions.

“As the saying goes, kung anong itinamin, yun din ang aanihin (what you sow is what you reap). If we put more pollution, more harm to the environment, more harm is going to come to us, but if we put more kanang mga maayo (good things) sa atong (in our) environment, mas maayo pa jud atong makuha (we will receive even better results),” she said.

The ICPC also organized an Earth Day Summit, where participants engaged in focused group discussions on environmental best practices, insights, and issues in Iligan City. Recommendations and insights were shared to address challenges and improve environmental sustainability in the city. (LELA/PIA-10 Lanao del Norte)

Organized by the DBS officers and headed by their President, Gem Tadefa, the virtual hangout was a  resounding success. Over 70 people joined the fun and shared their insights about love and relationships  in the digital age.

“We initiated the DBS Hangout tradition amid the pandemic to maintain connections with our members.  After the pandemic, it evolved into a means of fostering and fortifying relationships with other blogging  communities. “The DBS Hangout “Love in the Digital Era: Valentine’s Then and Now” marks our first Valentine’s Day  special since 2020, and it’s a remarkable, highly engaging event. Kim  Vargas of Metrobank organized a fun trivia game about Valentine’s Day and highlighted Metrobank’s  reliability for banking needs. Ripple8’s Julius Macalagay and Michelle Opple introduced their agency and

its awards and engaged attendees with a mini-quiz. Jarren Mateo and Erwin Colcol showcased Cebu Pacific  as a trusted airline and generously gave away two roundtrip tickets to any domestic destination in the  Philippines.

DBS President Gem Tadefa highlights that there will be more events for everyone this year. “The Valentine’s  Day special hangout won’t be the last. There will be more, and they will only get better and bigger. We are  working on something exciting, a project I cannot disclose. Content creators should stay tuned.”

The Davao Bloggers Society extends heartfelt gratitude to all its members, fellow blogging communities,  and partner brands for their support and participation. With more exciting events in the pipeline, DBS  looks forward to fostering further engagement and collaboration.

In line with the celebration of National Women’s Month, the Iligan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Incorporation (ICCIFI) opened the 2023 Trade Fair, March 3, at Robinsons Place atrium.

The trade fair features the best products of 50 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the city, ranging from processed food, gifts, and housewares to fashion accessories, beverages, home style and living, and health and organic products.

ICCIFI President Reggie Punongbayan said the event is an opportunity for businesses, entrepreneurs, and community members to come together and showcase their products, services, and ideas.

“Iligan City is always been known for its rich culture and history. This event is a testament to the vibrancy and diversity of our community. As we explore the different exhibits and stalls, we see the ingenuity and creativity of our local businesses, entrepreneurs, and the students, who are also participating in this event,” she said.

Meanwhile, Department of Labor and Employment Lanao del Norte OIC Provincial Head Lawyer Safrali Cabili said the trade fair is a big accomplishment for the Iligan Chamber because it is one way of showcasing local products. “Nowadays, not all of us would prefer an imported product, and I think this is the start of patronizing our own,” he said.

Moreover, the chairperson of the Committee on Trade and Commerce Industry, City Councilor Marlene Young, extended her full support to the business community.

“Being the chairperson of the Committee of Trade and Commerce Industry, we would like to assure you that we will do our best to put our efforts, especially in my office, to pass the possible resolutions and ordinances to improve the life of our business owners in Iligan,” she said.

The MSMEs will continue to display their products until March 8. Other activities lined up include financial literacy, a cultural show, a women’s success story forum, and Kapehan sa Iligan Chamber. (CEC/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)

The Department of English of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) together with the  English Language Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) in Indonesia capacitated 60 high school teachers stationed in the hinterland barangays with new skills and pedagogies in teaching English as a tool for communication and advancing cultures in 21st-century learning.

Through a community service program called “Communicate in English with Us,” teachers learned how to use information and communications technology (ICT) in differentiated instruction and project-based learning to promote inclusive education.

Merciditha Alicando, chair of the English department at MSU-IIT, said the participants learned how to use QR codes and were shown how to use ICT in the classroom. She then reminded the teachers that they should be excited about teaching their students, show them real things, and encourage them to do whatever they want in life.

Eko Purwanti, dean of UMY’s Faculty of Language and Education, said that their partnership with MSU-IIT was important because it gave teachers the tools to help their students learn more.

“Having this partnership, we can provide better opportunities for teachers to empower themselves. By empowering our students with English competencies, we believe that students can broaden their knowledge,” she said.

Participants of the program shared the challenges that they experienced in teaching. With the program, they have gained skills in preparing learning materials and learned strategies for teaching their lessons interactively.

Moreover, Mae Camañan, an English teacher from Tubaran National High School (TNHS) in Barangay Mandulog, is thankful for the program as it helped her improve her ways of teaching.

“The program really gives me a chance to improve myself in the way I teach English, especially in the form of macro skills. It really gives me a guide on how to motivate my students on handling the plan,” she said.

On the other hand, Spencer Tano of TNHS said he learned the importance of using differentiated instructions (DI) in delivering lessons based on students’ learning styles. (AAA/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)

The Department of Science and Technology boosts city-based Surban Machine Shop through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP). With the agency’s technological support, the firm attains 48% increase in productivity from 2018 to 2022.

In 2018, they availed assistance to answer much needed S&T interventions for the acquisition of a universal milling machine and shaper machine. This enabled the firm to fabricate parts in their production line and minimize low-quality outputs. They also boosted production by 23% from 130 work orders in 2018 to 159 work orders in 2022.  Gross sales increase by 38%  from 2018 to 2022. The firm has fully refunded its financial obligations to DOST in January 2023 and is planning on taking on another cycle of S&T Interventions through DOST-SETUP.

Mrs. Rosalina Surban, proprietor, with shop manager and husband, Mr. Retecio S. Surban, during the monitoring interview.

The owner, Mrs. Rosalina G. Surban said that they are grateful to the technical assistance provided by the agency on their business, even during the onslaught of the pandemic. “Tungod sa pagsalig nga gihatag sa DOST sa amoa paagi sa SETUP, nakumpleto among production line og wala nami nagpa-job out”, she said. Outsourcing costs have become additional profit since the assistance of the SETUP program.

The completed production line brought higher productivity for the firm and helped them weather the challenges of the covid pandemic. They also increased their B2B transactions with large-sized industrial customers in Iligan City, Kauswagan in Lanao del Norte, and Lugait in Misamis Oriental. They also sustained two additional workers and consistently provided training to interns from TESDA programs in Iligan City. With this, they were awarded with Bronze Bagwis Seal of DTI-10 in 2021 for their compliance to fair trade laws.

The Surban Machine Shop is a family-owned micro-enterprise in Tambo, Brgy Hinaplanon, which specializes in the fabrication and repair of machine parts for large industrial firms. It has been operating since 2016.

The SETUP program is a nationwide strategy that aims to utilize Science, Technology, and Innovation for enhanced productivity and competitiveness of MSMEs and priority industries. The DOST in Lanao del Norte actively supports the homegrown metals and engineering firms of Iligan City to upgrade their operations and maintain their productivity despite the many challenges to the industry and the local market.

ILIGAN CITY (PIA- Jamalodin B. The program is in line with the Universal Healthcare Law, which states that all Filipinos are guaranteed equitable access to quality and affordable healthcare goods and services and protected against financial risk.

“Nais nating ipaalam na sa PhilHealth meron ng check up ang bawat Pilipino. Ang direksyon ng PhilHealth ay preventive. Wala na tayong kababayan na papanaw na di man lang nakatungtong sa isang ospital o kaya nakapagpatingin sa doktor,” said  PhilHealth-10 Regional Vice President Delio A. Aseron II.

(We want to inform everyone that every Filipino has a check-up at PhilHealth. The direction of PhilHealth is preventive. No one will pass away without going to the hospital or being able to see a doctor)

The said forum gathered 50 hemodialysis patients and 50 motorcycle drivers, who received their PhilHealth IDs.

PhilHealth Iligan head Christine Mae Magno said that over the years, the government has done its best to expand its capacity to provide quality health care to the Filipino people.

Meanwhile, Iligan City Lone District Representative Celso G. Regencia said in a video message that he is pushing for projects that will benefit the people of the city.

With the help of the program, members can avail themselves of free check-ups, laboratory tests, and medicines in many different provider partners of PhilHealth.Hence, Joshua Daniel Pitogo, a hemodialysis patient, is happy with the program.

“Dako jud siya’g impact sa amoang daily lives kay naminus-minusan among gastos. Dako among kalipay nga libre jud sya. Naa free consultation, maghatag pud sila’g libreng tambal sa amoa ingkaso naa mi balation,” he said.

(This has a big impact on our daily lives because our expenses have been reduced. We are so happy with the free services. There are free consultations and free medicines)

The program also has other activities such as KoSulTa member and employer registration, assistance member portal, and account creation assistance for the public. (JBM/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)

ILIGAN CITY (PIA)–To supplement the services provided by the Barangay Employment Assistance Desk (BEAD) action officers, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-10 gave load cards worth P3,500 each to BEAD officers during the first quarter meeting at Barangay San Roque Hall.

The 44 barangays in the city have their own BEAD action officers. Thirty-eight of them were recipients of load cards after having complied with the 2022 Barangay Public Employment Service Office (BPESO) National Annual Survey conducted by the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE). The annual survey aims to assess the PESO’s and BPESOs’ capabilities in terms of resources and the services they provide to their clientele. It also serves as the basis for determining the other types of assistance they may need in order for it to perform its function effectively and efficiently.

The city government of Iligan has committed to and made significant efforts to improve its human resources development. With this, the government’s current mechanism for providing employment facilitation services must be strengthened and expanded, particularly at the barangay level.

BEAD also serves as a referral and information desk at the barangay level for various services and programs of PESO, DOLE, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, and other government agencies present in the area.

The PESO, in collaboration with the DOLE, TESDA, and Department of Education (DepEd), shall oversee, coordinate, and provide technical support for the barangay employment assistance desk.

Through PESO and pursuant to City Ordinance No. 17-6637, an ordinance establishing BEAD in every barangay in the city and providing funds therefor and for other purposes, the BEAD action officers serve as the BPESOs. (DOLE-10/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)
